The Brain Health: It’s SPECtacular program is designed to offer facilitators the freedom to explore, engage with, and implement the content and materials of this program to best fit the needs of their students. There are a multitude of ways to present this information. We offer a few suggestions, but do not feel limited to following these strictly. Facilitators can mix and match to create a format that works for them based on time constraints and working towards achieving overall classroom goals.
- One story can be presented each day, week, or month – different activities can be done throughout the timeframe to reinforce concepts. The assessment can be done at the end of the day, week, or month.
- Story videos can be shown in their entirety or broken down into segments based on attention span of children. When showing the video in segments, the facilitator can insert comments, questions or activities pertaining to the content.
- Prior to completing the Activities, the facilitator can reiterate the concepts pertaining to the activity by either using the content in the Scripts or by showing videos of the slides that are relevant.
- View the story video again prior to the Power Your Brain Challenge (PYBC) summative assessment.
- Facilitators should be aware that the students have access to all the story videos and they can be instructed to view the stories independently in addition to what is presented.
Listed below are the examples of ways to present the Brain Health: It’s SPECtacular program over the course of months, weeks or days. They can be modified to fit the time you have to present the program.
Monthly Focus (6 months)
Over a period of six months, the facilitator guides their students through the program. Each month, the focus will be one of the six components of SPEC Health (Brain Facts, Social, Physical, Emotional, Cognitive, and Brain Health).
Month 1:
Week 1 | Give students the Power Your Brain Challenge as a pre-assessment. (Optional) Show Brain Facts Story Video to students (ranges from 12-28 minutes). Depending on the attention span of the age group – you may want to stop the video at various intervals and talk about what students just viewed. Continue with video. Select one activity to complete (same day as video or another day). Rewatch the portion of story video that pertains to the activity or talk about the slide(s). |
Weeks 2 & 3 | Select one-two activities to complete with students. Prior to each activity, rewatch the portion of story video related to that activity. (Short clips of the story video are provided in the activities folder for easy access.) |
Week 4 | Show Brain Facts Story Video again to students. Assess students’ understanding by having them complete the summative assessment, Power Your Brain Challenge. |
Repeat this format for the five remaining components to complete the program in six months.
