Processing new information (learning) and the ability to recall or retrieve that information at a later time (memory) are cognitive functions that are widely studied in neuroscience. Integrative approaches to studying these functions include combining behavioral manipulations with molecular, electrophysiological, pharmacological, and more recently genetic techniques. The tasks in the cognitive module are aimed at evaluating the function of genetically targeted brain areas and neural systems/circuits involved in learning and memory. The tasks in this module permit several independent assessments of cognitive functions of brain systems that include the medial temporal lobe, striatum, frontal cortex, hippocampus, amygdala and other regions that are of interest to basic researchers and clinicians.
