This graduate workshop will focus on critical methodologies for conducting doctoral research on a range of topics that center issues of racism, colonialism and empire, and capitalist political economy. The workshop will feature input on student projects and general advice on conducting ethically informed and critically oriented research by anthropologist Kareem Rabie, author of Palestine Is Throwing a Party and the Whole World Is Invited: Capital and State Building in the West Bank<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Topics of discussion might include, but are not limited to, conducting research across different scales of analysis\u2014from the transnational to the everyday; the entanglement between empire and capital; interconnections between various locales across the world system; genre and the politics of writing; and navigating complex socio-political dynamics on the ground in research sites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Rabie\u2019s research focuses on privatization, urban development, and state-building. He is currently working on the social, economic, and imaginative geographies between the West Bank and China. PhD students from across the social sciences and humanities at various stages of their programs are encouraged to attend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Kareem Rabie is Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the author of Palestine is Throwing a Party and the Whole World is Invited: Capital and State Building in the West Bank<\/a><\/em> (Duke University Press, 2021).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event is open to JHU students, faculty, and staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
