{"id":143,"date":"2019-07-22T17:19:02","date_gmt":"2019-07-22T21:19:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.krieger.jhu.edu\/reich-group\/?page_id=143"},"modified":"2019-07-22T17:19:02","modified_gmt":"2019-07-22T21:19:02","slug":"hard-condensed-matter-physics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.krieger.jhu.edu\/reich-group\/research\/hard-condensed-matter-physics\/","title":{"rendered":"Hard Condensed Matter Physics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In earlier days, our lab studied problems in hard condensed matter physics, focusing on challenges in the core fields of magnetism and superconductivity, with a particular emphasis on the behavior of low-dimensional and nanostructured systems.\u00a0 Among the key results from this work were a series of experiments that elucidated the nature of the excitation spectrum in a variety of so-called quantum magnets, including the first observations of long-predicted magnetic field-induced incommensurabilities in the spin S = \u00bd antiferromagnetic chain, and pioneering studies of coupled quantum dimer systems.\u00a0 We also played a leading role in the first observation of the so-called \u03c0-phase state in superconductor-ferromagnet multilayers, a phenomenon that has been subsequently extensively studied as a possible route to quantum computation.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12906448\">Extended quantum critical phase in a magnetized spin-1\/2 antiferromagnetic chain<\/a>, B.
