With help from a grant given by Ignite Baltimore (http://www.ignitebaltimore.com/) in Spring 2013, our outreach organization set out to build two portable planetaria that could work with the open-source software WorldWide Telescope (WWT; www.worldwidetelescope.org). This software is available for download free of charge and the organization also provided instructions for building a portable planetarium out of wood and cardboard. We spent the summer of 2013 constructing two portable planetaria; one of which would be delivered to Southwest Baltimore Charter school, to enhance their astronomy education, and another we could use to bring planetarium shows we created to schools around the city. It has taken a year but we have successfully built both planetaria and held a fun morning of interactive demos at Southwest Baltimore Charter School to unveil their very own planetarium. This project will continue to enhance our outreach work for years to come. We were very pleased to be able to take a student’s concept for a high impact outreach initiative and make it happen and we’d like to be able to continue to do so in the future.
