Richard Lofton, “Strange Fruit:  How Respectability Politics Help Structure Educational Neglect.”

Helena Hicks presentation with Dr. Richard Lofton

May 11, 2022 @ 7:00 pm 8:00 pm EDT

After a two-year qualitative method investigation of educational inequalities in Baltimore City, this presentation will highlight how respectability politics can help foster structural violence and ignore Black excellence and agency. Over 135 students and their family members were interviewed to address their challenges and their solutions to help ensure they will receive a “through and efficient” educational system.

This session is the fourth and final mini-course in the Helena Hicks Emancipation School Spring 2022 Speaker Series. Each of the four mini-courses have a virtual, 40-minute presentation and a 20-minute Q&A session.
